Over the course of 60 pages, a spiraling narration takes readers through a kaleidoscopic range of improbably connected topics: from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, Russian cattle ranches, the murder of Anton Webern, and the planetary collision that led to the formation of the moon to the relationship between furniture design and political power, Nietzsche’s walks along the road to Zoagli, tall tales of the American West, and the ambiguity inherent to photography.

Digressions and detours along the way include the burial of a tattoo-covered Egyptian priestess, an urban legend about a black S.U.V. handing out cursed alms, a scene of marital strife from Marguerite de Navarre’s Heptaméron, and the rantings of a marquis who may or may not have a legitimate claim to his aristocratic title.
